Last week we sailed to Maassluis, where the Cherokee was lifted out of the water to measure the propeller shaft cone. After that, we continued to Middelharnis where the mast was removed and, together with the mast builder and sailmaker, discussed plans for a new fully battened mainsail. It was quite cold and the deck was slippery with ice, but everything has been set in motion. Next week, if all goes well, we’ll sail back (with mast) to Maassluis for the new folding propeller!
With the new folding propeller, we have 20% less resistance, which means we expect to reach 6 knots at 5 knots speed. The new hoisting mainsail naturally has a nicer profile than the old roller version, but it is also almost 20% larger, so I am very curious how fast and high the Cherokee will sail this coming season! This will certainly make a difference on crossings.
